White Rock Park Committee:

White Rock Park has the potential to be transformed into a vibrant community hub for a large area within Rancho Cordova.  It is the only park within the defined blue area below.

The Situation:  For far too long our neighborhood park has been inadequate. It has the sense of being outdated, unattractive, and unused.  There has been no real draw for residents to consider this park as a vital community setting. In truth, White Rock Park has been more like a vacant parcel rather than a soul and haven for our neighborhood.

Let's think about it this way:  How do you think our community would change if White Rock Park was renovated?  What would it be like for our neighborhood if our park had public restrooms, a spray fountain for kids, more tables and bar-b-q grills, covered areas, a soccer field, resurfaced tennis courts, walkways that were not cracked, attractive and inviting landscaping, and basketball courts that were the envy of other neighborhoods?

How would life be different for your household if White Rock Park was updated?

The Truth:  The reality is that if our park was renovated, we would be profoundly impacted and have a greater sense of pride and hope for our area.  Residents would use the park regularly, kids in some of the rougher apartments nearby would have somewhere enthusiastic to be, and we would see birthday parties, sporting events, meetings, city events, family cookouts, and regular opportunities for community building, networking, dog walking, and exercise.

The Promise:  We have been promised park improvements from the Cordova Recreation and Park District, but we have not seen any of these improvements.  Residents were even invited to at least two "Park Days" within the past several years where we gave feedback upon request to the Park District as to how we would like to see the Park updated.  Unfortunately we have not seen any renovations.

The Vision:  In light of this, in 2008 we want to see the White Rock area develop a strong voice for the sake of seeing our park restored and having our park become a well-used and vibrant part of our community. The Cordova Towne Neighborhood Association is inviting all residents within the White Rock area and other parts of Rancho Cordova to join us in an effort to foster successful communication with the Park District, to find creative and methodical ways to regularly and effectively communicate with the Park District, to enjoy our park through events, and to advocate on behalf of the White Rock area. There is a role for everyone to play, and so it is important that you take the initiative to make your voice known and heard. Your voice matters for our neighborhood. We are all in this together.

Developing a strong neighborhood voice is critical for our success.  Would you consider joining us in one small way listed below.

The Simple Start:  We believe that we can begin walking out our vision in very simple ways and that we do not have to complicate things or ask residents to give huge time commitments (we are busy too).  The most important element in this effort is that residents buy into the vision and step forward in basic ways.

Our Goals for early 2008:

1.  Get word out about what we are doing.

2.  Begin a successful letter writing campaign (we'll provide you with pre-stamped and pre-addressed envelopes).

3.  Apply for funding for park improvements under the Community Development Block Grant with the City.

Get Involved:  You are invited to get involved in one of three ways:  1) Be a part of helping to steer this effort by joining the committee, which will help facilitate & spread the vision;  2) Be a part of the letter writing campaign.  We are looking for a group of at least 31 residents who will donate five minutes per month to write the Park District a letter.  You would be assigned one day during the month and then simply write your letter on that day.  We will provide pre-addressed and pre-stamped letters along with a letterhead, so this can literally be a five minute project for you.  Maybe members of your household can trade off writing from month to month too.  The goal is to send the Park District at least one letter every day of the week.  We want them to know that we are longing for change, and that we want to see them follow through on their word;  3) Help Holly, a resident, work out the proposal for the Community Development Block Grant for park improvements.  You can help by writing, researching, and communicating with both the City and the Park District.  Please note that we are not planning to ask for money to improve what the Park District is already supposed to be doing.  We believe that they need to be responsible and held accountable to follow through on their commitments.  It is our intention to seek improvements for other than what they are supposed to be doing.

Other Ideas: Of course, If you have other creative ideas for how to get involved, speak on.  Other potentials include designing a logo for our efforts, making bumper stickers, creating t-shirts, developing park surveys for residents within the White Rock area, taking photos, helping market our efforts, communicating with local media, etc.....  The bottom line is that we would love to see residents apply their skills, experience, creativity and heart in order to develop White Rock Park into a vibrant central community hub.

Please contact us with any ideas!!!
