THE SITUATION: Did you know that the Folsom Cordova Unified School District has a program to assist homeless students? Did you know that last year they served 680 kids within the district? It is hard to grasp that so many local kids are struggling with something as basic as a stable place to live. It's the truth though and so we recently asked the District Liaison for Homeless Services how we could help out. She told us that having new socks is a felt need amongst students. So it makes good sense for us to do a sock drive to help ease the financial burden on families and show our local youth that we support them - especially when they are enduring hard times. Our goal is to see our community at large gather 680 pairs of new socks by December 13th.

WHAT IS A HOMELESS STUDENT? "Homeless" is defined as "an individual who lacks a fixed, regular and adequate residence." The kids that the school district serves are living in unstable places like motels, the streets, in tents, in cars, in RVs in a parking lot, in homes without power or water, in homes without a parent or legal guardian, etc... These are kids who reside within FCUSD territory within the cities of Rancho Cordova and Folsom.

We are optimistic about this project and encouraged by residents from many neighborhoods and local organizations who are pitching in to make a difference in the lives of local kids. We are grateful also for the various neighborhood leaders who are collaborating to make this project successful. Thank you in advance for your partnership and generosity.

OUR FINAL COUNT IS 3,144 PAIRS OF SOCKS. THANK YOU!!!!!

r r r
THANK YOU to the residents and organizations who made Project 680 a success. Thank you to residents throughout Rancho Cordova and nearby local cities, family members of residents, all drop-off locations, local businesses and organizations, and anyone who told a friend about this project. 100% of the donations will be used directly for FCUSD students that are documented as living in an unstable environment (homeless). This has been a simple way for us to advocate for local teens who are struggling and it is encouraging to see the massive support and community buy-in from so many different venues - even in this economy. Well done everyone!!!

DROP-OFF LOCATIONS: We want to give a special thanks to all drop-off locations for working so hard for this cause and for networking with people around you. You are appreciated.

PUBLICITY RELATING TO PROJECT 680: We are grateful for all local media who covered Project 680 and drew attention to homeless students in our area. Have a look at video and news stories below.

  Frequently Asked Questions
rr rr r r
What size of socks should I get?
Any size for Junior or Senior High students
rr rr r rr
How many pairs of socks are you aiming to collect?
  680.
r r r r
If I participate, how many pairs of sock do I have to donate?
There is not a minimum amount at all. We are grateful for a household that gives one pair of socks and grateful when multiple pairs or packs come in too. Whatever you give, whether small or large, your contribution is valuable and noticed.
r r r r r
What type of socks should I buy?
The word is that youth these days like the "no show" ankle socks as pictured above. We were told this by officials at both Cordova HS and Kinney HS. Obviously we will accept whatever type of socks are given and be grateful for your generosity, but where possible we would love to be able to cater toward the "no show" ankle preference. But if you know teenagers, ask them what they think is cool and stylish and then consider their judgment in your purchase (even if it is different from "no show" ankle socks).
r r r
Should I buy new or used socks?
New. We will not accept used socks.
r r r
  Why are new socks helpful?
Giving families one less thing to worry about is a helpful thing. New socks will assist families in being able to save money, give a sense of dignity that something so basic like socks is not missing from the dresser drawers, and enable families to do less laundry and/or take less trips to the laundry mat (and therefore save money by not having to pay for detergent and a load of wash). And the obvious thing we love is that kids will have multiple pairs of socks to choose from just like we do.
r r r
Why socks? And can I donate other stuff?
Our focus is only socks right now because we were told by the District Liaison for Homeless Services from FCUSD that socks would be a great emphasis. Since we were specifically told that kids need socks, we feel confident in this project. Besides, the District does a shoe drive every year and so this project goes along very nicely with what they are doing. We are not accepting any other donations at this time. If you have something else you are interested in promoting, we say go for it. For now, thanks for dropping off socks only. However, the District Liaison for Homeless Services says that they do accept Payless Shoe Source gift cards year round so that they can provide shoes to those in need (we don't mind collecting gift cards on their behalf or connecting you with them).
r r r
  Who is behind this effort?
People like you. Also, various neighborhood leaders throughout the city and local organizations/businesses have volunteered to tap into their networks, be a drop-off location, or tell others about this project. This project is being spearheaded by Cordova Towne Neighborhood Association leadership and residents within the White Rock area of Rancho Cordova, but it belongs to all of us. Thank you to various neighborhoods, residents, local organizations and local businesses who are stepping up to help lead this effort.
r r r
Do I have to be a resident in the White Rock area to get involved?
Not at all. This effort is being promoted by residents and employees throughout the city. This is really a collective effort and we welcome all locals to get involved - even if you are on the outskirts of FCUSD territory or nearby cities.
r r r
Can I come to your Christmas caroling event for the final sock count?
On the evening of December 13th we will be doing a caroling event in our neighborhood and you are invited to this event (even if you are not a resident). We will meet at 10267 Croydon Way at 5:30pm and then return to this household to have a Christmas party between 7-9pm. At this party we will tally the final sock count and celebrate a successful community event. Come to caroling and the party or just one. See our home page at www.cordovatowne.com or download a PDF flier HERE.
e r r
Where can I drop them off?
We have various drop-off locations throughout the city of Rancho Cordova as well as communities close to Rancho Cordova. You can go to any of the following households. If residents are not home, please drop socks off in a "sock box" on the porch. You are welcome to knock on the door to present your donation or you can remain anonymous in your giving by simply dropping the socks in the box at the front door. If you would like to collect socks at your work or another location, that would be great. Thank you for your kind donation.

Can I get a tax receipt for the donation?
Not from us. Sorry. We are a volunteer neighborhood association without non-profit status.
r r r
What are some creative ways to raise funds in this current economic downturn?
Maybe sell something small on Craigslist and then use your profit to buy a pair or pack of socks at Wal-mart. Email people in your circles and ask them to consider participating in this effort. Talk with your household and kids especially about creative ways to come up with a few dollars to make a purchase. Let your kids run with ideas on how to help other kids. Give up coffee for a few days and then use that money for socks. As a family, consider giving up one Christmas present in your household to instead use that money for socks.
r r r
The FCUSD really looks after homeless students?
Yes. The District Liaison for Homeless Services is a paid position within the FCUSD and there is also another full-time position in the office. Additionally there are two part-time positions to help with the effort. Serving homeless students is a very real need for the District (and many other districts) in both Rancho Cordova and Folsom and is really about "leaving no child behind." This emphasis in the District is funded by Title I money through State & Federal programs.
r r r
Can our organization or business pledge to raise a certain amount of socks?
Sure. That would be great. Just let us know.
r r r
  How can I help?
Beyond donating socks, one of the most important things you can do is to let people in your circles of influence know about this effort. Tell your neighbors, family, people at work, friends, and church members. Send out an email with the following link: www.cordovatowne.com/project680.html
